Want to learn how to write children’s books?

Have you got a children’s story you want to tell? Would you like to have the opportunity to try your hand at writing for young people? Maybe you’d like to discover if this is the kind of writing for you. Then why not enrol on my Writing for Children Courses in Brighton and France – or my new online course? You may be a beginner or have some writing experience or even be already published and looking for a new challenge. You may just want to make use of the retreat-like nature of the courses to find time to write in an enjoyable, stimulating environment with some expert guidance, engaging company and splendid hospitality.

“The course was incredibly helpful, full of brilliant writing exercises, techniques, discussion, tutoring, positivity and invaluable constructive criticism. The environment was so supportive and the atmosphere so relaxed.”

Based on the Arvon model, the course offers participants the opportunity to write and share ideas, and to explore techniques involved in writing a range of fiction for children of different ages – picture books, middle grade and young adult fiction – with one to one tutorials, group workshops and discussions, and plenty of writing time, all in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. All of this and delicious food and wine too!

Writing Courses in Crecy-en-Ponthieu, Picardy, France

For over ten years now I have run an annual residential course on writing for children in my house in the small rural French town of Crecy in Picardie (an hour’s drive from Calais). The next course will run in 2020.

The price is just £485 and includes free travel between Ashford International Station and Crecy, shared accommodation, all meals and drinks and tutorials. There’s an amazing open fire too. Book your place now!

What participants have said about the course:

“The situation of the house in a small French country village was in an ideal setting for inspiration.”

“Alan was the perfect tutor. He wouldn’t butcher your work nor would he praise it if it wasn’t worth it. He made apparent the gaps and flaws, made you ask question about your narrative structure and character development.”

“I enjoyed the atmosphere, the people, that the champagne went all over the floor, that people walked around in their pyjamas!”

Writing Courses in Brighton

These run similarly to the French courses but are only three days (usually Friday to Sunday) and are non residential (though I do have a good link with a very reasonably priced and comfortable Air B and B property). The price is  £275 and includes tea and coffee, lunch and early evening drinks each day. The next course will be from 20 – 22 September 2019.

Online Course

This new course is ideal as an introduction to anyone who thinks they would like to write for children but may not know for sure which age-group would most suit them. Or maybe you know but aren’t sure how to get started. The course runs for ten weeks through a closed group Facebook page with five separate modules covering ideas, characterisation, structure and plot, theme and content, style and how to find a good ending. The modules will carry a mixture of information, practical advice and writing tasks and there will be opportunities also to chat within the group, as well as some general feedback. The first course will start on 10 September at a special first-time only price of just £50 (or R850).
